GIG GUIDE: August 2nd – 7th

GIG OF THE WEEK:

WEDNESDAY: Comadre, Totally Unicorn, Quiet Steps, Let Me Down Jungleman, Idylls @ The Patch
8pm, $15, 18+

We love Totally Unicorn. The fact that the dudes are playing a hometown show again, just a matter of weeks after they decimated a near-sold-out Patch on their headlining tour with Ironhide, is cause enough for a mad celebration. This time, they’ll be hitting the stage before Californian punks Comadre, who, by all accounts, are absolutely awesome. Just to put some extra-delicious icing on an already sexy punk rock cake, Let Me Down Jungleman join Quiet Steps and Idylls on the lineup’s undercard.

If you saw Unicorn’s last hometown show, you know they’ve developed into probably the Illawarra’s best, tightest and most entertaining live act, reinforced by a consistent touring mentality and rewarded through support slots for the likes of Frenzal Rhomb, The Chariot and La Dispute. Their live shows are becoming the stuff of local legend, and this one is sure to be no different. Get along, get to the front, get a party hat, and bet amongst your mates at how long it will take for Drew to tear his kit off (usually takes around 12 seconds after he walks on stage). Gig of the week.

GIG GUIDE: July 18 – 24

Kirin J Callinan

GIG OF THE WEEK:

FRIDAY: ‘Siberian Nights’ @ Yours and Owls
feat. Kirin J Callinan, Fashion Launches Rocket Launches, Siberia DJs
8pm, $10, 18+

Siberia Records – established by the guys from Midnight Juggernauts – have been building a reputation for hosting wild, creative and thought-provoking parties, courtesy of their ‘Siberian Nights‘ events. Held in warehouses and clubs around Sydney and Melbourne, the parties are always unique and ever-enjoyable, comprising a combination of live acts and DJs… with a few surprises along the way.

Yours and Owls will host the very first Wollongong edition of ‘Siberian Nights’ later this month. With a lineup consisting of Kirin J Callinan and the Siberia DJs, the night promises to be sonically entertaining and  interesting.

Of most interest to Radar, however, is the inclusion of ‘Fashion Launches Rocket Launches,’ an act that features on many Siberian Nights events. The Sydney-based act is somewhat of an indie supergroup, with an ever-changing lineup of musicians that has included members of Midnight Juggernauts, Ghoul, Jack Ladder, Megastick Fanfare, Ghostwood, and Djanimals. However, for our July 22 date, FLRL is billed as a combination of “Midnight Juggernauts, Kirin J & Jonti/Djanimals.” Such an all-star collaboration is sure to be worth the price of admission alone.

GIG OF THE WEEK:

It proved too difficult to choose just ONE, so Radar is nominating TWO “gigs of the week”!

G.O.T.W #1: WEDNESDAY: Tonight Alive, The Conspiracy Plan, Critics, Avaine @ CBD Bar
8pm, $15, 18+
The first is the Tonight Alive show on Wednesday night, at Rydges CBD Bar. These guys are one of Australia’s hottest up-and-coming young bands, having already toured extensively overseas and acting as tour partners to The Wonder Years, Amy Meredith, Heroes For Hire, Lost Prophets, Forever The Sickest Kids and more. They play the CBD Bar on Wednesday, as part of a national headlining tour. Three local bands will warm the stage for the Sydney-based five-piece;  The Conspiracy Plan, Critics and Avaine will play support slots, with each having impressed at local in past months. If you like your music a little poppier, and/or you are an unashamed fan of bouncy pop-punk (I include myself in that description), this is one show you shouldn’t miss. But be quick; tickets are almost all sold out!

G.O.T.W #2: SATURDAY: Totally Unicorn, Ironhide @ The Patch
8pm, 18+
Totally Unicorn are simply one of the region’s finest, hardest-working and best-respected acts, and their hometown show at The Patch will be the final show on their ‘Get Chilled or Tie Dying’ tour with Brisbane band Ironhide. The show on Saturday (originally scheduled to occur at Headlands Hotel before its closure) will be the band’s first local show with their new bassist, and their first hometown headline show for some months, after supporting The Chariot, Oh Sleeper and Frenzal Rhomb in recent times. In the recent absence of Mary Jane Kelly, Totally Unicorn have established themselves as Wollongong’s best – and most entertaining – heavy band, and this show is sure to disappoint no-one.
There’s a second reason why you should attend, of course; both Totally Unicorn and Ironhide have recently been swindled by an unscrupulous label manager, and are probably substantially out of pocket, financially. Read more details about the Six Nightmares Productions saga here; then buy a ticket, buy some merch, and help the dudes out.
Get along, grab a party hat, don’t stand in the front row unless you’re prepared to give frontman Drew a piggy-back… and get psyched for some magical animal hardcore.

WEEKLY PREVIEW: 30th May-5th June

GIG OF THE WEEK:
SATURDAY: Kaleidoscope (EP launch), Dane Overton (EP launch), Vanguard Party, Curious Temple @ Rydges CBD Bar
8pm, free, 18+

Just in case you weren’t aware, the most diverse, most rockin’-est, most free-est, most local gig of the YEAR is going down at Rydges CBD Bar on Saturday. The gig, celebrating the launch of EPs from the stoner-rock dreadlocked dudes of Kaleidoscope, as well as folk/roots singer-songwriter Dane Overton, has steadily been dropping delectable and delicious details since being announced earlier in the year; first, synthesiser-fuelled party animals Vanguard Party were added to the lineup, then the gig was announced to cost the wallet-friendly cost of five bucks. In the last few weeks, the door charge was lowered to the even MORE wallet-friendly price of FREE.
So you’ve really got no excuse to not get to this gig.
Featuring the most diverse lineup you’re likely to see in Wollongong for a while – from indie-pop to folk to psychedelic rock – and some of the region’s finest young talents, as well as celebrating the launch of two fine new releases from Kaleidoscope and Dane Overton, this gig is sure to be one to remember. And, let’s face it; what other venue offers free entry on a Saturday night? Get out and support new local music, and support gigs held at Rydges; it’s a sweet venue that is working hard to offer a venue for Wollongong musicians.
For a taste of what their respective EPs have in store, check out brand new tracks both bands; ‘Vacancy’ by Dane Overton and ‘The Towers’ by Kaleidoscope, both premiered on Radar!

WEEKLY PREVIEW: May 23-29

GIG OF THE WEEK:

FRIDAY: Megastick Fanfare, The Parking Lot Experiments, Sealion @ Otis Bar
8.30pm, $10, 18+
Another rad gig coming up at the Otis Bar, for fans of experimental pop music. A whole lineup of up-and-coming Aussies, with Sydney’s Megastick Fanfare headlining as part of a national tour to launch their album, ‘Grit Aglow.’ Definitely turn up early for Sydney’s Sealion, however; they opened the show for Parades on their recent gig at the Harp Hotel, and were really excellent. They seem like a band just about to take off; more in the post-rock vein than the pop one, but they are a surprise and welcome addition to this show. Otis have begun to build up a bit of a reputation for hosting incredible small-name bands, and tonight should be no different. If you like your music with a heavy dollop of indie atittude, and a fair whack of feel-good pop and experimental, unconventional stylings, this is the gig for you.
