TOUR NEWS: Prince Rama & Sun Araw; Smith St Band;

US psychedelic acts Prince Rama and Sun Araw will be playing Melbourne’s Sugar Mountain festival alongside Tune-Yards, Shabazz Palaces and Deerhoof in early 2012, and have announced plans to team up for an extensive Australian tour.

Wollongong will host both bands on January 26, at Yours & Owls. Prince Rama and Sun Araw both have new albums to spruik – ‘Trust Now’ and ‘Ancient Romans,’ respectively – and have actually teamed up before, for a joint project aptly titled ‘Prince Sunarawma.’ Both bands have a well-established reputation for experimental psychedelic rock, with both having backstories that raise more than a bit of interest; Prince Rama is comprised of sisters who grew up in a Hare Krishna sect and count Animal Collective among their biggest fans, while Sun Araw’s sound has been described as “trippy, organic and deeply psychedelic, drawing on inspiration from afrobeat, west coast ’60s psych, Neil Young and krautrock.”

The ten-date tour pulls into Yours & Owls on January 26; so once you’re done with your Australia Day customs of getting sunburnt and drunk at the beach, head into town for what is guaranteed to be one of the trippiest, most mind-bending nights of music you’ll likely see in 2012.

The band, who have topped more than a few ‘album of the year’ polls (including that of Bombshellzine) with their LP ‘No One Gets Lost Anymore,’ will usher in 2012 with a 15 date national tour.
