FRIDAY: John Steel Singers, Jonathan Boulet, Guineafowl @ Unibar
8pm, $18 (students) or $25 (general admission), 18+

The aptly named “Here’s Johnny” tour pulls into Wollongong University on Friday, showcasing three of Australia’s finest young acts; all of whom should be familiar to avid (or even occasional) listeners of Triple J radio. First cab off the rank is Sydney’s Guineafowl, a one-time one-man recording project that soon spawned a fully fledged band. Coming off the back of a successful headlining tour in support of debut EP ‘Hello Anxiety,’ the band produce a sound that is both dreamy and powerful, both serene and epic, all shimmering guitars with the occasional electronic twist. The perfect intro for this co-headlining tour from Johns Steel and Boulet.

An uncommon occurrence for musicians, Jonathan Boulet is better-known for his solo endeavours than those of his regular band; apart from his tribal-influenced folk, the multi-talented Boulet also plays drums in Sydney post-rock band Parades. However, it is under his own name that he is hitting the road this time, with a slew of anthemic, joyous folk-pop tunes set to induce spontaneous handclaps and singalongs at what is sure to be a packed room at the Unibar.

Probably the most conventionally-accessible band on the lineup (i.e. the one that your Mum is least likely to say “what’s that pretentious twiddly soppy crap?”), John Steel Singers’ brand of upbeat and quirky pop has seen them rapidly winning fans since the release of debut album ‘Tangalooma’ late last year. The album is named for the island of the same name, and tells you all you need to know about their music; it’s warm, bright and summery, and makes you feel just a little more at ease with the world.
With each of these acts set to make a big splash in 2011, catch them all together in one place – at your local Unibar, no less!
